Ozone Applications

Our ozone systems are used in the potable and wastewater sectors, as well as industrial sectors to achieve the following aims:

Borehole Water Treatment

Ozone is our number one solution for most borehole water applications due to its effective oxidation of  iron in water. Iron and manganese removal is one of the more common applications for ozone in drinking water systems due to the fact that iron and manganese are easily oxidized by ozone. The oxidation of iron and manganese from water is a very fast reaction.

Iron and manganese is not a cause or concern for health related issues, and the main purpose of iron and manganese removal is due to the discolouration of walls and surfaces when the water is irrigated against it, and the eventual build-up of iron and manganese on the inside of pipes, geyser elements, and other surfaces. 

Conventional filtration fails to remove iron and manganese from water due to the fact that both are soluble (non-removable) in water and this causes these elements to flow directly through filtration systems, unless they undergo some form of oxidation to transform them into removable particles.

After successful oxidation of iron and manganese to form insoluble particles in the water, the particles can then easily be filtered from the water. To remove the buildup of iron in the filter a backwash must be performed on the filter periodically. This backwash water contains extremely high levels of iron and manganese and care must be taken when disposing of the water. As stated, it poses no health risks, but will caused plumbing problems over time.


Ozone Disinfection on Wastewater

Disinfection is considered to be the primary process for the inactivation or destruction of pathogenic organisms in water, to prevent the spreading of waterborne diseases to downstream users and the environment. It is very important for wastewater to be adequately treated prior to the disinfection process in order for any disinfection to be effective. Ozone disinfection is very effectively used in wastewater processing due to the fact that ozone acts as a very strong oxidant and viricide.

Advantages of ozone in wastewater treatment/disinfection:

  • Ozone is 3000 times more effective than chlorine in destroying viruses and bacteria
  • Ozonation utilizes a short contact time
  •  Ozone decomposes rapidly leaving no harmful residues that need to be removed after ozonation
  • There is no regrowth of microorganisms after ozonation, except for those protected by the particulates of the wastewater stream
  • Ozonation elevates the dissolved oxygen concentration (DOC) of the wastewater. The increase in DOC reduces the need for additional aeration in most cases.
  • Ozonation on wastewater reduces foul odours providing an added benefit to those working in and around effluent plants


Our ozone disinfection & filtration systems are effectively utilized on the last stage of winery effluent treatment by a number of large wineries in the Western Cape area and references will gladly be provided upon request.
